Tesla is now officially in Malaysia, the brand launching this morning at an event at the Kuala Lumpur Pavilion. Its entry into the market is led by the Tesla Model Ywith the midsize SUV on sale here at the three forms of specification revealed via the online configurator last week.
The three variants of the Tesla Model Y available for the Malaysian market are:
- Tesla Model Y Standard Range RWD – RM199,000
- Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD – RM246,000
- Tesla Model Y Performance AWD – RM288,000
Standard Range RWD is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile battery and drive unit warranty, while Long Range AWD and Performance AWD come with an eight-year/120,000-mile battery and drive unit warranty. All prices include sales and service tax (SST), with 100% excise and import taxes and circulation tax exemption. online orderswith a non-refundable fee of RM1,000, it started last week.

Buyers will have the chance to get up close and personal with all three Model Y versions, and for quite some time, as they will be on display at Center Court, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from today until October 31.
All three models – Standard Range RWD, Long Range AWD and Performance AWD – will be on display from 10 am to 10 pm every day for the more than three month duration of the show for the public to view and order. The company added that the first deliveries of the Model Y to Malaysian customers will begin in early 2024.
Designed and built as Tesla’s first mass-market electric SUV, the Model Y competes against models like the bmw x3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLCand in the EV realm, it faces the bmw ix3 and the Mercedes-Benz EQC. For the Malaysian market, the Model Y is only available as a two-row five-seater for now.
Tesla does not officially reveal its battery kWh sizes, preferring to differentiate by range. When it comes to charging times, the Model Y, which runs at a maximum efficiency of 250 kW, can charge up to 120 km in just five minutes with a Tesla supercharger. For the latter, the former of the 10 Supercharger stations planned so far for Malaysia, a eight-bay station located at Pavilion Kuala Lumpurit is scheduled to begin operations in the near future.
Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect to find in the Model Y variants on offer.
Tesla Model Y Standard Range RWD – RM199,000
The entry level Model Y in Malaysia is the Model Y Standard Range RWD. Power goes to the wheels via a single rear motor. The battery used is of the LFP type, offering the car a maximum autonomy of 455 km (WLTP cycle). Performance specifications include a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 217 km/h. As standard, the RWD comes fitted with 19-inch Gemini wheels, but 20-inch induction wheels are available as an RM10,000 option.
Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD: RM246,000
The Model Y Long Range AWD, which as its suffix suggests has two motors, one on each axle. The battery used in this is an NMC-type battery and provides the variant with up to 533 km (WLTP) of autonomy. It’s quicker to the century mark from a standstill in 5.0 seconds, but top speed is identical to the RWD at 135 mph. Acceleration Boost, which reduces acceleration time to 4.5 seconds, is available as a cost option; It can be purchased in the app after you get the car, not when ordering.
Tesla Model Y AWD Performance: RM288,000
The top variant of the Model Y is the Performance AWD, which also uses an NMC-type battery but sacrifices some range (up to 514 km, WLTP) for better performance. It can reach 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h. It comes equipped with 21-inch Uberturbine wheels, performance brakes, a carbon fiber spoiler, aluminum alloy pedals, and lowered suspension, among other things.
As for the interior, all three variants have a black vegan leather interior (upgradeable to black and white for RM5,000), a panoramic glass roof, a 15-inch central touchscreen, a dual wireless charger, and four USB Type-C ports.
Also standard is a 13-speaker premium audio system with a subwoofer and two amplifiers, power-adjustable front seats, heated front/rear seats, heated steering wheel, and an air conditioning system with a HEPA filter system with bioweapons defense mode. As for storage, it has a 854-litre rear trunk and a 117-litre ‘frunk’ (under the hood, where the engine would be in an ICE vehicle).
There are five colors available for the Tesla Model Y, and these are Solid Black, Multi-Coated Pearl White, Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, and Multi-Coated Red. Pearl White is the only color that is included in the price of Model Y. Black, silver and blue will cost an additional RM5,000, while opting for red increases the cost by RM10,000.
