The Acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered the resuscitation of the Awards and Commendations system for the Nigerian Police Force.
The awards will start this year and will be held annually.
CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Police PRO in a statement said that Egbetokun has put the machinery in place to host the Nigeria Police Awards Night this year.
Outstanding police personnel, in all sectors, and certain individuals who have contributed to a successful police system in Nigeria would be honored and celebrated, he said.
The 2023 Nigerian Police Awards Night will be unveiled and announced when appropriate.
The awards will be implemented under the direction of the Egbetokun administration, to enhance the motivation and encouragement of police officers.
This revamped commendation system represents a significant advance from the past, as it now covers all officers involved in every major case, no longer focusing solely on arresting officers or commanders, Adejobi said.
“The new system is in line with the provisions of Section 92 of the Police Act 2020 and Order 68 of the Orders and Instructions of the Force, and will be a milestone in recognizing the collective efforts of all officers to maintain law and order in the nation. .
“Traditionally, the Nigerian Police Force has a history of awarding commendation and rewards to specific officers who have shown exemplary performances in critical operations.
“With the new system, commendations and awards will now be given to all officers who played a crucial role in solving major cases, promoting a sense of camaraderie, unity and teamwork within the force.
“This development emphasizes the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility to achieve the goals of the force.
“Furthermore, the introduction of this new commendation and award system also marks a commitment to weaning away unnecessary special promotions, which have been ridiculous in the NPF so far.”
According to Adejobi, the new awards and citation system will provide a fair platform for officers to be recognized and rewarded for their exceptional dedication and performance without relying solely on special promotions.
“The IGP envisions a renewed sense of pride and dedication among police officers as they know their hard work and dedication will be appropriately recognized and celebrated.
“In conclusion, the Inspector General of Police recognizes the need to revamp the commendation and award system within the Nigerian Police Force.
“The new system of awards and mentions will promote a culture of recognition, teamwork and professional growth.
“By acknowledging the contributions of all officers involved in major cases, we aim to create a more cohesive and motivated Police Force, committed to upholding the tenets and principles of the Police Act 2020, Force Orders and Instructions, and serve the Nigerian people with excellence and renewed vigour.
