‘Queens On The Run’ Plot Recap: What Happens In The Movie?
The friends met after a disappointing day, and Patty expressed how she hoped she met them when they were in high school. As they talked about high school, they reminisced about the trip they had planned but never went on. They intended to start the journey without informing their families, and they made a list of things to do. They wanted to go to a beach and do a striptease; they also planned to get high and even rescue animals; they expected to be rebellious and Marilu wanted to confess her love to Antonio Posadas. Marilu dated Antonio when they were young; she really liked him, but suddenly he stopped contacting her. If Antonio had never stopped talking to her, she might not have married José. Marilu often wondered what had happened to her childhood sweetheart and Paty was excited to find out on social media. He was a handsome man who was involved in the restaurant business and was single with a puppy.
Paty proposed that they go to Cancun to look for Antonio Posadas and make him a trip worth remembering. Famela wanted to scatter her mother’s ashes in the Caribbean and Paty hoped to visit the aesthetic hospital in Mérida to get the implants. The ladies decided to do it all together and go on the trip without telling their families. Marilu initially disagreed with the plan. She couldn’t think of leaving her family for a girls’ trip, but when Jose didn’t come home the night of his wedding anniversary, she decided she’d had enough. Paty realized that Esteban did not have time to listen to her plan, so she decided to keep the trip a secret. Famela was the only one who confessed the truth to her partner, knowing that she would understand. She was glad that she was finally planning to part with her mother’s remains. The next day, Estrella arrived in her red convertible, which she affectionately called “Corcholata”, and the four of them set off on their journey.
Why did the trip go downhill? Why was Marianu upset with Estrella?
While the women envisioned the trip as being straight out of a funny movie, it didn’t turn out that way. The moment they left their hometown, they got stuck in traffic and were soon attacked by a truck full of chickens. But on a positive note, Patty lovingly adopted one of the chickens and named it Kentucky. They ran into a bit of trouble with the police when Estrella stripped down on the road to lure a group of men in a jeep. Although the issue was unnecessary, Estrella checked one box on the list and took a liking to police officer Roberto Martinez. When a girl asked for a ride in her car, Marilu convinced the rest of her that it was a good idea. They assumed the girl, Lola, was a sex worker, but they didn’t delve too deep into her business and took her to Veracruz. While they were driving her to Veracruz, they waited at a gas station, and that’s when Marilu discovered Famela’s gun. When Famela tried to stop Marilu from dropping the gun, two shots were fired. They managed to escape the situation and safely drop Lola off at her destination. After spending a night discussing each other’s flaws, the girls hit the road again, but the car’s tire gave out. They stopped a car to get help, but instead, they called for trouble.
The man they came across was the notorious arms dealer and human trafficker El Gavilán. Although El Gavilán initially planned to use the women to his advantage, he realized that they were too old for his purpose. So instead, he took all of his possessions, including the remains of Famela’s mother. Famela could not accept that a stranger would take her mother from her before she could say her last goodbye. She chased El Gavilán’s car, but eventually he ran them off the road and over a cliff. With careful moves, the ladies managed to get out of the car with their adopted chicken before the car fell off the cliff and burned. After losing her car, they got into the van of a hippie gang and Estrella was surprised to meet Roberto Martínez again. While Roberto intended to check the truck thoroughly, Estrella distracted him and he was soon called to the emergency service. The friends spent the night with the hippies and ate magic mushrooms. The mushrooms led to vivid imaginations where Patty dreamed of meeting the Holy Mother and imagined her asking her to leave her husband for a better life.
Meanwhile, Famela imagined her husband dressed as her mother asking her to let her go, and somehow, the conversation gave her a sense of clarity. Although her hallucinations episode was going very well and cute, it soon turned awkward and strange when Estrella confessed that she was the one who deleted all the emails that Antonio had sent to Marilu. The next day, when they woke up, Marilu couldn’t forgive Estrella for what she had done years before and, to make matters worse, the hippies made a meal with her pet chicken. After the hippie episode, Famela decided to rescue her mother and went to the El Jack strip club to look for El Gavilán.
Explanation of the end: Who was Lola? How did the queens defeat El Gavilán?
After reaching El Jack, they found Lola. As it turned out, Commander Lola was part of the secret operation coordinated with the DEA to bring in El Gavilán. She had appointed a group of dancers to help distract him, but they all fell ill. The ladies stepped in to perform at the club to help Lola get El Gavilán and also win the $5 million cash prize. During her sensual performance, the women walked up to El Gavilán and pointed a gun at him. They asked her to accompany them to his office, where they tied him up. Famela concentrated on finding the ashes, while Marilu got irritated when she saw Estrella. Estrella explained that the reason she chose to delete her email was because he had tried to kiss her while she was in a relationship with Marilu. She couldn’t let her best friend be with a man who wasn’t loyal, and she did what he had to do to protect her.
After learning the truth, Marilu was glad to have a friend like Estrella. The right hand of El Gavilán seized Paty and the queens were forced to untie El Gavilán. They were surrounded by men with guns pointed at them, but luckily Estrella had been texting officer Roberto Martinez on Bumble the entire time. The police broke into the club and attacked El Gavilán and his men. One-eyed seized the ashes of Famela’s mother and she was furious. She threatened to release the ashes, but he refused to do so. When she shot him, he dropped the urn and Famela jumped down the stairs to save her. Meanwhile, El Gavilán pointed his gun at Famela; he blamed her for the trouble she was in and wanted to bring her down when she was vulnerable. But what he didn’t know was that Marilu was right behind him. She pulled the trigger, killing El Gavilán. The queens made headlines for their bravery in defeating one of Mexico’s most notorious criminals. While they cheered on television, Paty asked the audience not to vote for her husband.
“Queens on the Run” ends with Marilu finally deciding to confront Antonio in Cancun, but ultimately decides against it. She realized that she was always trying to confess her love for herself and never for a man. Meanwhile, José and Ramiro arrive in a boat, singing a love song for their brave wives. Although José’s gesture impressed Marilu, she wanted him to work hard every day to make her marriage work, and he promised to do so. Famela decided not to focus on getting pregnant but on traveling with Romiro. She admitted that she wasn’t romantic, but she had learned to control her need for control. Esteban confronted Paty about what she said on television and she admitted that the only thing she wanted from him was her divorce. She didn’t care about the luxuries he provided her; she simply wanted the freedom to follow her dream. She realized that she was beautiful just the way she was, and that she didn’t have to change herself for a man. Estrella and officer Roberto Martínez expressed their love for each other. A year later, Paty released her book about her journey, which was going to be adapted into a movie. But that was not the only good news; Famela was about to give birth when they ran from the TV interview to the hospital. Life turned out great for the ladies, and while their trip wasn’t ideal, they all learned something from the trip.
