The pair began dating shortly after meeting on the set of the Australian television series Correlli in 1995. The actor later recalled the immediate connection he felt after crossing paths with Furness, telling Today in 2018: “I knew two weeks after meeting Deb that we were going to be together for the rest of our lives.”
A year earlier, the Les Misérables star shattered his first thoughts when he met his now-wife. “Deb, she was a big star,” he said. jess cagle in 2017. “I get picked up and Deb is in the front seat of the car. I will never forget. She unbuckled her seatbelt, turned around, reached over, removed her sunglasses, and said, “Hello, I’m Deborra-Lee Furness, nice to meet you.” I remember thinking, ‘I like this girl.’
Jackman and Furness’s romance was not easy at first. They faced some obstacles when the actress began to worry about her age difference of 13 years.
“She is like [broke up with me], a little bit,” the Greatest Showman star revealed on the “Aussies in Hollywood with Jenny Cooney” podcast in 2018. “I knew it 100 percent; I even knew when she was trying to find reasons to break up with me.”
After their brief separation, the couple exchanged vows in 1996 and expanded their family with son Oscar and daughter Ava. Jackman and Furness have offered glimpses of their dynamic over the years.
“I feel blessed to have experienced that I feel like I met my soul mate, whatever it is,” the Fire alum said at Anh’s Brush With Fame in October 2020. “When you find a partner in crime that you share and grow together, and life is hard as we know it, it’s not all good, and when you have someone there who is so supportive you can really stand naked. You have to.”
She continued: “When you have kids and life and whatever, you stand naked, authentic, warts and all, this is what it is, and you’re loved, there’s nothing better.”
After two decades of marriage, Furness opened up about how she laughs off rumors about their relationship.
“Hugh has been gay for whatever, I mean hey guys if he was gay he might be gay!” she joked during the “Not an Overnight Success” podcast in April 2022, referring to speculation about her husband’s sexuality. “He no longer had to hide in the closet, and he would be coming out Brad Pitt, or whatever. Not that Brad is gay, but you know what I’m saying!
