On Tuesday, PLDT and Smart Communications Director of Information Security Angel T. Redoble announced that what the PLDT Group does to block illegal sites on the web can be extended to prevent the spread of illegal copies of copyrighted materials. From author.
The Manila Bulletin reported that PLDT has blocked “more than a billion attempts” to CSAEMas well as phishing and scam websites.
Redoble said the company’s anti-piracy campaign “will be no different.”
“We can block at the domain level, just like we can block at the content level,Drumroll confirmed. “This anti-piracy campaign will be no different. You can simply submit the site you want us to block.”
Redoble also said that they may block the entire domain if the site is primarily focused on hacking. However, he said they can’t block the entire site when content that violates anti-piracy rules is uploaded to a legitimate site.
According to Redoble, they can be accused of “denial of service” or preventing legitimate users from accessing a legitimate site.

Citing data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the Manila Bulletin reported that overall, internet users in the Philippines recorded “more than 564 million hits” to music piracy sites between 2020 and 2021.
Electronic video piracy in the country, on the other hand, has grown to 20 million users by 2022 with a revenue leak of $781 million.
Redouble admitted that blocking both illegal content and websites is reactive and “unsustainable” as cybercriminals are likely to move on to another site after blocking the illegal site. He also said that there has to be a “sustainable” way of doing it.
