One policy analyst, Yiadom Boakye, has argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate (predictably John Mahama) will not have a campaign message for the 2024 general election if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by the President Akufo-Addo is capable of solving the economic challenges facing the country at this time.
Speaking on Hello FM recently monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Mr. Yiadom Boakye, who is also a highly experienced educator, explained that the NDC’s trump card for the 2024 general election is the current economic crisis and once the NPP fix it, NDC will be ran out of message.
He added that the change in minority leadership, which replaced Haruna Iddrisu, a lawyer, with Cassiel Ato Forson, an economist, is aimed at positioning the NDC well as it seeks to campaign using the economy.
“What the NDC is using for their campaign is the economy. So, if by the grace of God, the NPP is able to solve the economic crisis, it will be very difficult for ex-president Mahama to receive any other message. This is because his only campaign message is about the failing economy. And that is why the NDC made changes in the parliamentary leadership and put Ato Forson as its leader, ”he opined.
Ghana’s economy has been hit hard by the challenges, forcing the government to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). But meeting the conditions to secure the $3 billion cash bailout has been difficult. Deadlines for squeezing the bailout have been missed from time to time and the government has had to beg friendly countries to intercede with China on its behalf as it seeks debt restructuring.
The NDC has regularly chided the NPP government for mismanaging the economy, but blames the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine crisis for the failing economy.
