“It is with great sadness that I have to share with you the passing of my father James Gordon Bennison MBE, also known as Jim, this afternoon at 4:00 pm. His health has gradually deteriorated since early January.
Born in March 1931, Jim just celebrated his 92nd birthday. Teacher at Brinnington Modern Secondary School and founder of the Stockport Basketball Club, for which he received his MBE

He has always been there for me and will remain in my heart forever ????
Thanks for everything dad, rest in peace.”
His passing was also mourned by Stockport Basketball Club on social media.
“A sad day for the club – I was woken up by the news that our founder and club president, Jim Bennison, has passed away.

Who was Jim Bennison?
Jim Bennison was considered a basketball icon who, throughout his career, influenced the lives of several young basketball players.
At Stockport MBC, he was a teacher, year head and night school head. Jim attended Loughborough College to study art and design. His secondary education was completed at The King’s School in Macclesfield. He lived and died in Stockport, which he loved.
Stockport Basketball Club:
The founder of the Stockport Basketball Club was Jim Bennison MBE.
Jim was an art teacher who had a great love of sports and was exposed to basketball during a training course while teaching at Brinnington High School. Jim played an important role in Stockport basketball for over 60 years.
In 1963, he established a basketball club at the institution. Stockport Basketball Club, formerly known as Brinnington Lapwings, was founded and operated from the school’s modest gym, which was located on Lapwing Lane in Brinnington.
Jim was part of Brinnington, which later became the Stockport Louvolites, Stockport Lapwings, and ultimately the current Stockport Basketball Club. The Louvolites women’s team won many cup finals and league top division championships.
In 2013 Jim was awarded an MBE from the Queen for his contributions to basketball.
