“I am disappointed to have to [withdraw] this morning due to the aggravation of my plantar fasciitis,” the 47-year-old professional golfer wrote via Twitter on Sunday April 9. “Thank you to the fans and @TheMasters who have shown me so much love and support. Good luck to the players today!”

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the tissues that causes pain in the heel of the foot. According to the Mayo Clinic, plantar fasciitis commonly causes a throbbing pain when people take their first steps in the morning and can frequently recur if they are on their feet for long periods. Woods, for his part, has not given more details about his injury.

The Masters began on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 April, with Woods scoring towards the bottom of the overall standings. When the championship resumed on Saturday, April 8, the California native was seen limping on the 17th hole. At the time, Woods told reporters that he was dealing with “constant” pain in his right leg.

“Jumping with the left leg is fine. If I did it on the other one, not so well,” said the professional athlete, according to ESPN.

The PGA Tour champion, who has previously won the Masters five times, made his 25th appearance overall on the course at Augusta National earlier this month. “I don’t know how many more I have in me,” Woods confessed to CNN on Wednesday, April 5. “Just so I can appreciate the time I have here and treasure the memories.”

Woods returned to golf in 2022 after surviving a harrowing car accident a year earlier, which left him with serious leg injuries.

“I think my game is better than last year at this particular time,” Woods told CNN on Wednesday of his recovery. “I think my stamina is better, but it hurts a little more than last year just because at that particular time when I came back, I hadn’t really pushed it that often. I just have to be aware of how much I can push it.”

The Masters will conclude later on Sunday with the winner taking home an impressive prize of $3.24 million. brooks koepka is currently ranked number 1 in the ranking, followed by jon rahm, patrick cantley and sam bennett.
