According to reports, no less than three policemen were shot dead by gunmen on Saturday night.
The incident, which occurred at the border checkpoint along the Abakaliki/Enugu highway, was said to have been perpetrated by thugs who were reported to be operating two Sienna buses.
Another policeman who was shot in the leg is said to be receiving treatment at a hospital in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state.
The Ebonyi State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the incident.
Command spokesman SP Chris Anyanwu said: “The attack by gunmen on the Ebonyi/Enugu border took place at around 6:08 p.m.
“Three Operation Safer Highway police officers were fatally injured and later confirmed dead.
“The thugs operated in two Sienna vehicles, entered the checkpoint and opened fire on the police officers.”
