It’s very different from the studio’s other games, and according to director John Johanas, that was very intentional. Johanas wanted to change the image of the studio after the evil within 2 and that led to what would be hifi fever. Johanas pointed at an interview with xbox which was later inspired by Edgar Wright movies. The obvious comparison is that of Wright. baby driver which is a music-driven heist movie. However, he pointed out that the main film that inspired the team was shaun of the dead due to the scene where the characters fight in a bar while Queen is playing.

“One of the first things we had, and this influenced the direction of our style of how we did things, were the movies that Edgar Wright would make as a director,” Johanas said. “And I know that maybe people would compare this to Baby Driver, which is about music, the music is tied to the visuals in a very cohesive way, but actually this predates that in a significant way. There was a scene in the Shaun of the original Dead who had them fighting in a bar to a Queen soundtrack [Warning: adult language] which was choreographed for him. Maybe you saw it, maybe you remember it. I thought, ‘That was great, what if we make a game exactly like that?’ And this is how I presented it. That’s how the idea came about, many, many years [ago] when we were still doing the original the evil withinbut [Hi-Fi Rush] He finally gave us the opportunity to follow that angle.”

Johanas also revealed that he was inspired by the work of Edgar Wright Scott Pilgrim against the world for the protagonist, calling him a bit of an anti-hero. However, he’s not an anti-hero because he’s bad, but simply because he’s dumb and doesn’t fit typical hero archetypes.
