Gunmen kill Imo police sergeant

Gunmen killed a police sergeant, Chinyere Obilor, who was serving in Imo state.

Police were killed on Wednesday when gunmen ambushed her and her colleagues at the Ihitte junction on Owerri-Aba Road in Owerri.

She and her colleagues were said to have been on duty when the gunmen in a minibus known as a Busimo attacked.

They appear to have emerged from a nearby bush and opened fire on police personnel.

A yet-to-be-identified person said to be a civilian was also killed.

The policewoman was attached to the Highway Patrol team of the state police command.

A source said the vehicle that was abandoned by the attackers had been recovered by police.

A source said: “The woman was dedicated to her duties. She was killed in a shootout when the criminals ambushed them at the Ihitte junction on Owerri-Aba Road. She was from Mgbidi in Imo. A mother of four who was very cheerful is gone. This is so painful.

“I was attached to the Highway Patrol Team Unit. The criminals abandoned their vehicle (Busimo) with which they entered. He has been recovered and taken to Owerri.”

Imo State Police Command spokesman Henry Okoye had not yet responded to a query about the development at the time of writing.
