the executive director of Fallout New Vegas Studio Obsidian has said they want to make another Fallout game before they pull out, but the California studio isn’t working on any Fallout games right now.
Feargus Urquhart said game pressure that Obsidian’s development board is “pretty full” right now with its existing lineup of projects like Avowed and Outer Worlds 2, as well as ongoing development of Grounded. As such, Obsidian is “not working on” a new Fallout game at this time.
That said, Urquhart, 52, said he hopes he can make another Fallout game before he retires. “I don’t know when it will be, I don’t have a date for my retirement. It’s funny, you can say I’m already 52, or just 52. It’s one of those two, depending on the day. My hope is that that happens, but we’ll have to wait and see”.
Urquhart’s comments are nothing new or surprising. He has been saying for some time that wants to make another fallout game someday. In October 2022, he said, “Of course, if we ever had the chance to make another Fallout game, we would.”
Obsidian was a private company until 2018 when Microsoft acquired the studio. Later, Microsoft bought ZeniMax, which owns Bethesda, so now Obsidian and Fallout are under the same roof. This could suggest that Obsidian may have an easier path to making a Fallout game, but nothing is confirmed.
Josh Sawyer, who directed Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, also recently spoke about the series. He said in November 2022: “I could see myself working on it again, but you know, we’ll see where the future takes me.” Sawyer said that a future Fallout game could take place in New Orleans, California, or the Midwestern United States, or possibly outside of the United States.
Fallout 5 is currently in development at Bethesda Game Studios, but it won’t arrive for a long time. Bethesda Game Studios’ next big release is 2023’s Starfield, which will be followed by The Elder Scrolls VI, and then Fallout 5 after that.
