The Ohanaeze Youth Movement has criticized comments credited to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, in which she claimed to have known of meetings between Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) spokesperson Ikenga Ugochinyere and the unidentified gunmen. who attacked his residence over the weekend.
On Saturday, January 14, 2023, caravans carrying gunmen and arsonists stormed the residence of Ugochinyere, who is also the PDP candidate for the Ideato North/South State federal constituency, in his hometown in Akokwa, where four people died, including his uncle. .
It was noted that Governor Uzodinma, while reacting to the carnage, had accused Ugochinyere of violating an agreement he (the PPD candidate) allegedly reached with unknown gunmen and it was Ikenga’s breach of the agreement that led to the attack.
The youth group, in a statement signed by its secretary general, Nwada Amaka, called the governor’s comment on the attack shameful and said he had just exposed the depth of his knowledge of the attack before his execution.
The group said his attempt to divert attention by making wild accusations has shown that he is behind the attack.
The group urged the police to ensure that all perpetrators of this heinous crime are promptly arrested for immediate prosecution and necessary punishment as stipulated by law.
The statement says:
“It really is disappointing that after seeing the horrifying pictorial and video evidence showing the extent of the damage and the murderous escapades of those gunmen, the governor who runs the state where this occurred says this.
“The house of an indigenous person, the cars were set on fire, his uncle’s and other people were brutally murdered. The governor who is supposed to be in charge of ensuring the protection of the lives and property of the citizens he governs is busy making baseless accusations.
“This is not the first time that Ikenga has been attacked, he was openly threatened by a person appointed by a sitting governor last month and last week, an attempt was made on his life. We urge security agencies to do what is necessary, no one is above the law, perpetrators must be held accountable.”
