Pokémon TCG Scarlet and Violet EX and Tera Mechanics Explained, Pre-Orders Now Open

After showing off the new type of card at the Pokémon World Championships last year, The Pokémon Company has officially unveiled the new EX and Tera mechanics that will arrive in the Scarlet and Violet Expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game in March.

The Pokémon TCG Scarlet and Violet expansion will reintroduce Pokémon EX to the game, which hasn’t been seen since the Sun and Moon series of expansions, however this time there will be two major changes. First, where only the basic Pokémon were Pokémon EX before, Pokémon EX in scarlet and purple can be a basic Pokémon, a stage one evolution, or a stage two evolution.

Pre-orders will receive this Lechonk card for free.

The second major change is the debut of Tera Pokemon EX, which is based on the Terastallizing mechanic from the Scarlet and Violet games. Tera Pokemon EX works the same as EX Pokemon, but with the added bonus of being unable to take damage while on the bench. Being able to attack benched Pokemon is a primary strategy of current top-tier competitive Pokemon decks (Chilling Reign’s Inteleon is a good example), so Tera Pokemon EX being protected from this will be a new angle to consider for future competitions.

Pre-orders for the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG set are available now at the Pokemon Center website, with Elite Trainer Boxes themed around Koraidon and Miraidon, booster display boxes, and six-pack booster packs. Pre-orders will also receive a free Lechonk promo card with purchase.

The Pokémon TCG Scarlet and Violet expansion will be released at the end of March 2023. It follows Crown Zenith, the final expansion for Sword and Shield, which will be released on January 20.
