Logan Holgate, the young England rugby union player, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 18.

Logan Holgate, Hensingham ARLFC player, passed away on 11th January 2023. He was a member of the England Lions Community team that just won the European Championship in Italy.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of one of our youngsters Logan Holgate,” the Hensingham club announced.

“Logan has been with the club since he was young and has been playing since our open age and under 18s this year.

“We want to record our condolences to family and friends. We are all devastated by the news and will continue to support the family as much as we can.”

England Lions RL said: “Everyone associated with the Commonwealth of England Lions Program was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Logan Holgate.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) declared on Wednesday January 11 that he had passed away “suddenly”.

Although Logan Holgate’s cause of death was not disclosed. A Salford Red Devils spokesperson wrote on Twitter: “Everyone at Salford Red Devils is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Logan Holgate.

Logan played for our U18 way alongside @hensingham arl and was set to move up to the reserve team this season.

Who was Logan Holgate?

Logan Holgate had been dubbed a ‘star of the future’. He first came to attention in 2021. He made his Lions debut with the Under 16s in a win against Wales at Colwyn Bay.

Logan Holgate was on the under-18 road for Salford and was selected for the Commonwealth of England Lions Under-19s last year.

Due to his burgeoning form at the club, it wasn’t long before he was firmly in the plans of the Under 19 selectors, first excelling in trials and then being part of the latest touring team to make history in Italy last September. .

Logan virtually never left the scene during the demanding six-game qualifying day while in Italy, impressing his teammates and staff with his work ethic, infectious enthusiasm and quick wit.

“Then he excelled in the semi-finals and final, when the Lions overcame Wales before beating France to win the European Under-19 Championship for the first time.”

“He leaves a lasting legacy on the program and staff – a bright young man and a teammate. All our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this devastating time.”
