Dr. Joel Garcia joins the San Marcos Unified School District as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources

San Marcos Unified School District welcomes Dr. Joel Garcia as its new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.

Dr. Garcia’s selection and board approval for the position comes after a thorough career search process, which includes input from staff on qualities that are important to the position.

“As a school district, we are a people-centered organization and we need high-quality professionals to better serve our staff and students. The board of directors and I believe that Dr. Garcia has the clear skills and strengths that will allow us to continue to do this with excellence,” said SMUSD Superintendent Dr. Andy Johnsen.

Dr. Garcia brings 21 years of educational leadership, with his last seven years of experience serving in Human Resources Administration in San Diego County school districts. Most recently, Dr. Garcia joins SMUSD from the Ramona Unified School District as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. He directly led employee recruitment and recognition programs, including contracts, assignments, and evaluations, and led collective bargaining efforts as the district’s lead negotiator.

In addition to Dr. Garcia’s numerous awards, he has a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from California State University, San Marcos.

“I am honored to join the San Marcos Unified School District team and contribute to the long history of educational excellence, to better serve our students, staff and community,” said Dr. Garcia.
