VFACTS December 2022: Toyota HiLux sales are highest since Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon two decades ago

Australians bought a record number of utes last year, for work and play. This is how they ranked on the sales charts.

The toyota hilux ute was the overall best-selling vehicle in Australia for the seventh consecutive year in 2022.

Not since the Holden Commodore’s 15-year winning streak more than a decade ago has a brand led the market for so long.

Toyota HiLux sales for 2022, when counting 4×2 and 4×2 variants combined, as is industry practice, amounted to a record 64,391 deliveries (up 22 percent), ahead of second-placed Forest ranger (47,479, down 5.6 percent) that stalled during a switch from old to new models.

The last time a new motor vehicle eclipsed the 60,000 mark in a calendar year in Australia was in 2005 when the Holden Commodore topped the charts; the Ford Falcon last passed this milestone in 2004.

The Toyota HiLux was also the best-selling vehicle in the Northern Territory for the 22nd consecutive year, Queensland for the 16th consecutive year and Western Australia for the 15th consecutive year.

The Toyota HiLux also set a new Australian record for four-wheel drive vehicle sales in a calendar year. The tally of 47,329 Toyota HiLux 4x4s eclipsed the previous record set the previous year by the Ford Ranger.

The Ford Ranger lost control of 4×4 ute sales last year in the midst of switching to a new model.

After 4×4 variants of the Ford Ranger outsold 4×4 variants of the Toyota HiLux in four of the previous five years, the Toyota HiLux regained the title it has held for decades.

Despite the setback, the Ford Ranger ranked second all-time in the Australian new car sales race for the sixth consecutive year in 2022.

The mitsubishi triton posted an all-time sales record in 2022: it reported 27,426 examples sold and surpassed the Isuzu D-Max after making up ground lost due to chronic stock shortages the previous year.

In fact, the Mitsubishi Triton had eclipsed its previous annual sales record in Australia by the end of November 2022, with one month left in the year.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series (which has a two-year waiting list and has been temporarily withdrawn from sale) reported 11,390 deliveries, a 7.2 percent decrease amid ongoing production constraints.

sales of the nissan navara It reversed course amid production disruptions, and China’s utes surge, reporting 10,526 examples sold in 2022, a 30.4 percent decline from a year earlier and the lowest annual result since records were kept.

The Isuzu D-Max fell last year (down 3.1 percent), yet restricted supply peaked Mazda BT-50 double harder (17.4 percent less).

After competing head-to-head in the 2021 ute sales race, great wall motors outsold its Chinese rival LOS for second consecutive Year.

Although the pair were separated by fewer than 200 sales in 2021, Great Wall Motors extended its lead over LDV in 2022 (7,806 vs. 5,959 deliveries). The result represented a year-on-year increase of 13 percent for Great Wall Motors and a decrease of 11.1 percent for LDV, which struggled with supply.

Demand for US pickups remained off the charts, with the ram 1500 outselling its nearest rival, the silver chevrolet 1500by almost three to one (5,481 versus 1,823).

Ram Trucks Australia posted an all-time Australian record of 6,149 vehicles in 2022 (up 52.8%), when heavy-duty variants are included, compared to the total Chevrolet truck count of 2,399 for the year.

The strong sales results for US trucks are likely to be welcomed by Ford Y Toyota that they plan to introduce their full-size models, the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra, by the end of this year.

The Ssang Yong Musso ute posted record sales in Australia after three straight years of growth, despite a question mark over the future of the struggling South Korean automaker.

However, dealers say their confidence in this underrated brand has been restored after new owners bought it on the brink of bankruptcy last year.

The jeep gladiator posted a surprising sales gain (up 9.7 percent) despite facing a series of sharp price increases throughout the year.

Sales of the Volkswagen Amarok slowed to its bottom line since it went on sale in 2011 amid the switch from the old model to the new Ford Ranger-based one that will be in local showrooms in April 2023.

Here’s how each ute fared in last year’s sales race, and how it’s performed over the past decade or so.
