What about e-piracy?

Posted in Blog

There are things some people give a damn about and some things other people don’t.  I don’t give much of a damn about e-piracy, although  I do agree that’s wrong and a very bad, stinky thing.

But there are quite a few authors who have been quite verbal against piracy.  They are passionate against it. I think this is a good thing.  People should take action against things they feel are wrong.   It is not my job or crusade to shut folks up.

Here’s a site where authors are speaking out specifically on piracy–that’s the purpose of the site–including some majority romance authors and fantasy authors.  A columnist at the popular mystery site, Murderati, wrote an extensive and biting post against piracy.  Prominent and popular authors are passionately speaking out against piracy all over the ‘net.

Several black romance e-book authors put up a site against e-book piracy and exposing pirates.  One author in particular was singled out to receive savage criticism for speaking out boldly from a few vocal in the romance community.Black romance authors have far smaller readerships and clout than many others speaking up publicly against piracy.  One wonders why one was singled out to be harshly condemned, when others speaking out haven’t been?  No,  I don’t wonder why, I pretty much am certain of the reason because of the one making the most fuss…that was a rhetorical question for y’all.

I have been passionate about causes where I was beating my head against the wall.  There’s not a damn thing wrong with passion about something that is wrong.  There is something wrong with the people who are uncomfortable or worse, hate, that sort of righteous passion.  There is something rotten about people who only hate it from select people and accept it fine from those with power or clout, or simply only from those whom they respect.

I have no problem with those who are passionate against piracy even though it’s not my crusade.  Below is the notice I put in my e-books.  This is for new readers who would not have read my work otherwise and liked the story.  The other folks I either don’t care about or feel there is no point in caring about them. My philosophy is the more eyes on my words, the better.  Maybe they will become my readers.

If you didn’t buy this e-book legitimately, and you enjoy the story, please consider supporting the author and purchasing her titles from Monica Jackson’s  Soul Satisfyin’ Reads at http://monicajackson.com or any popular online e-book retailer. Thanks!

How do you think authors can be effective against pirates, or is it a lost cause?
