I just started reading Karen Rose, and have been liking her a lot (especially since they don’t have to be read in order). They aren’t funny like Evanovich, but there are bits of humor (in the sense that the characters have a sense of humor.) I’ve got Allison Brennan’s “No Evil” trilogy up next — it’ll be my first time trying her.

Those romance folks don’t like talking about blacks much.

The idea of overseas publishing is something to think about–but I hate to say it, New York is where it’s at as far as publishing.

I might ask at the black fiction or the SFF sort of sites.

Speaking of the Guardian…You know, nobody over at Smart Bitches ever did answer my questions about Americans (especially black Americans who had some issues with the U.S. publishing industry) getting published in the UK and such — or even if there were drawbacks to overseas publishers that we might not know about. I think the “Best Selling Author business has hit Britain a bit, but possibly not as much as over here. (But they don’t do book segregation by race, either. They barely segregate YA sci-fi from adult.)

Aw hell, I recommend everything the man ever wrote.** A good book is a good book.

*White dude writing Native Americans and I thought I was reading Sherman Alexie! He made it onto lists approved by actual Native Americans!
*Except “Fluke,” which I can’t get into for some reason.

Actually, this year was different–the books were nominated by the conference attendees. The ones with the highest nominations were deemed the finalists.

Hi Monica, I want to thank you for the Bettye Griffin recommendation. I picked it up at lunch today at B&N and so far, I love it. The writing and rhthym are very nice, and I love that the heronies are all 50. I am sooooooo done with the ‘I found my HEA at age 18′ trope.
